Tanya Holland opens Brown Sugar Kitchen in West Oakland to great acclaim
Tanya Holland has recently opened her long-awaited dream restaurant in West Oakland, Brown Sugar Kitchen. Here she combines her French-based culinary skills from her training at France’s noted La Varenne cooking school with her intimate knowledge of Soul Food. The author of New Soul Cooking, Tanya has found an ideal location to serve the growing West Oakland community and soul food lovers from around the Bay Area. In a modernized art deco space, Tanya serves breakfast and lunch soul food favorites, freshen up with seasonal produce and unique touches.
Breakfast starts with tender, fluffy buttermilk biscuits and may proceed to an ample plate of chicken and waffles with apple cider syrup. Organic cheddar grits, various egg dishes and scratch-made baked goods round out morning offerings. Creole BBQ shrimp, a po-boy sandwich, jerk chicken and signature BBQ baby back ribs tempt later diners. Of course there are ample sides: baked mac ‘n cheese, molasses bbq baked beans and cast-iron skillet cornbread with brown sugar butter. Tanya hopes to open for dinner in the near future.
